Job Description:

Abrades surfaces of metal or hard-composition objects to remove adhering scale, sand, paint, grease, tar, rust, and dirt, and to impart specified finish, using abrasive-blasting equipment: Shovels or pours abrasives, such as sand, grit, or shot of specified grade into machine hopper.

Masks specified areas of object to protect from abrading action.

Turns valves on equipment to regulate pressure and composition of abrasive mixture flowing through nozzle.

Starts equipment that directs blast or flow of abrasive-laden compressed air, gas, or liquid over surface of parts.

Manually directs nozzle over surface of large parts or inserts arms through glove-fitted cabinet openings and manipulates small parts under nozzle for specified interval.

May examine finished parts to ensure conformance to specifications

Perform a variety of routine and preventive maintenance painting duties, such as high steel and structural steel painting, sand blasting, powder blast and preparation for enamel, epoxy, bitumanstic, and latex painting.

Prepare and paint a variety of surfaces including, aluminum, ferrous metal, shop coated metal, uncoated metal, finished hardware, accessories, plates, and other surfaces as specified; protect and prime surfaces as appropriate

Apply protective coatings to items such as equipment and miscellaneous metalwork; metalwork in corrosive atmospheric areas, subject to toxic fumes, wash down, flooding or abrasion; and tanks, vessels and hoppers constructed of aluminum or ferrous metals.

Apply zinc chromate primer to aluminum surfaces in contact with, or embedded in, concrete and to all faying surfaces of bolted aluminum joints.

Repair shop coats and apply coats of specified paint to motors, gears, switchgear and other similar equipment.

Remove shop applied protective coatings from equipment by sandblasting; perform field blast cleaning as specified; remove dust by brushing, vacuuming or air blasting; remove heavy deposits of grease or oil from surfaces.

Correct work as directed; repair nicks, scratches or other small imperfections in the finish.

Ensure compliance with Federal, State and local occupational safety, health and air pollution control regulations including Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and with all safety precautions recommended by paint manufacturer.

Clean up work areas, equipment, supplies and materials; apply standard safety practices and procedures.

Determine and apply appropriate coating systems for painting ferrous metals which may/may not be subject to submergence in water, sewage, or corrosive environments.

Maintain safety standards in the performance of duties.

Perform related duties as required.
